What’s the process for instructors to be able to teach driving for a test or start their own driving school in Winchester?

Becoming a driving instructor is a four tier process before you can teach driving lessons. The first tier involves online theory and hazard perception training using an online system. You will have access to our training videos so that you can study at your own pace in your own time. Like a driving test the first step is a theory test, although the test is more difficult than the standard driving test with 100 randomly generated questions and a fixed pass mark of 85.

Once this is completed you will study hazard analysis which is split into the following four sections:

  • Road Procedures
  • Traffic Signs and Signals from the Highway Code, Car Control, Pedestrians and Mechanical Car Knowledge
  • Driving Test, Disabilities, and the Law
  • Publications to read and Instructional Techniques Used

Part two is 15 hours minimum of practical driving instructor training through driving lessons.

This part is very much like a standard driving test, just longer than a normal driving school test. You will have to demonstrate a high ability in driving skills, techniques, anticipation, and a high level of consideration for other road users to read the road. Therefore you will only be allowed to make six minor mistakes to get through.

  • An eyesight check
  • You will be asked to read a number plate from a distance of 20 meters in order to proceed
  • Show me, tell me questions
  • You’ll be asked three questions before you start driving and two show me questions at random whilst driving
  • General driving ability to show you’re a competent driver during your driving test
  • You’ll need to show a high level of expertise of driving whilst using the car’s controls
  • Use of correct road procedures to an instructor level
  • Anticipation of other road users’ actions and ability to adapt as necessary
  • Good judgment of distance, speed, and timing. Essential for driving instructors.
  • Safety consideration of others
  • You’ll need to drive in an environmentally friendly manner to be a driving instructor
  • Driving in reverse to instructor standards
  • You will be asked to parallel park, reverse around a corner, reverse for 15 metres, drive into a parking bay, and back out again
  • Independent driving ability
  • You will drive for a minimum of 20 minutes using sat nav or road signs as appropriate for instructors’ standards expected by us

Part three involves 40 hours of teaching training in Winchester including lesson plans and a teaching manual to ensure you are industry ready to become a driving instructor and ready to pass your pupils.

In this phase, you will be taught advanced driving techniques and instructor training. You will be given example lesson plans and advice on structured ways to plan your own driving lessons and create your own driving lessons once you’re a qualified driving instructor in Winchester.

Our driving school will ensure that you can communicate effectively with your driving students and give appropriate feedback to help them improve their driving ability.

Part four is optional for driving instructors but allows you to teach students driving lessons using a temporary license validating your car insurance for up to six months whilst you learn to pass part three.
